The games had started with shooting pellet guns at bottles in a booth. Each family could choose one member to participate, and my group asked me to represent us. I had thought that Flynt, considering his recent fascination with guns, would have wanted to take the shots, but his desire for us to win outweighed the fun he might have. Because I had experience shooting a rifle as well as years of handgun training, I did quite well. I hit more bottles than anyone else but a guy named Herb, who admitted he was an avid hunter. Herb’s family was in the lead, but the Tilsons were tied for second. Although Myles gushed how well I had done and had put an appreciative hand on my shoulder, my son acted like his new puppy had died.

“Flynt, it’s just a trophy, remember?” I reminded him, messing his hair as we walked to the next event.

“Dad, you need to have more fire in the belly. That’s what our gym teacher always tells us,” Flynt replied. “We need to be ruthless.”

Myles chuckled. “Only if we end up in a battle to save our country from horrible people wanting to destroy us.”

That comment made me think of how that seemed a possibility every election season. If the people running White Pines were any indication of where the country was headed, we were in trouble. “I’ll put in more effort on the next event, okay?”

Flynt nodded at me, but turned to Josh. “The next thing up is the trivia game. I’m counting on you and your dad to carry us to victory on that one.”

I thought shy Josh might scare at the responsibility, but instead, he straightened up with confidence. “If they don’t ask a lot of dumb questions about pop culture and sports, then I’ve got this.”

Flynt smiled. “No worries, bro. It’s a green FN. Dad and I can jump in on the questions for the stupid people.”

“Hey!” I frowned until Myles snickered. I play-punched his arm. “Don’t encourage him. And I don’t even want to know what a green FN is.”

Flynt rolled his eyes. “It just means a guaranteed win, Dad. You need to spend more time on social media.”

“No, you need to spend far less,” I replied.

We made our way to the area where tables were set up with instructions for the application that we could download to log in our responses to the questions that were posed. The rules were explained to us, which included that our first answer was our final answer, there was a time-limit to respond, and we needed to keep our voices low enough at each table to prevent other families from hearing our conversations. We also were told that we weren’t allowed to use our cell phones to look up the answers and if anyone was caught doing so by one of the monitors walking the room, they’d be eliminated from the tournament.

The first question was tougher than I thought it would be.
